What Is Schema?

According to, Schema is a structured data vocabulary that identifies entities, actions, and relationships across the internet on webpages, emails, etc. [1] The vocabulary is used to help search engines better understand the meanings of various topics across the web to provide a better user experience (UX) to online users. With Google consistently building a more semantic online world, different schema markups help SEO for your marine business grow.

Types of Schema in SEO

The vocabulary on incorporates formats for structuring data based on a variety of people, places, and things on the internet. For example, the most popular branch on the list of items schema markups define is Creative Works, which is a collection of markups pertaining to creative content such as movies, books, videogames, music, and more.

Schema markups are utilized with languages of code like RDFa, Microdata, and JSON-LD and are added to HTMLs to embed metadata.

Also known as Resource Descriptive Framework in Attributes, RDFa is a code that can be applied to any HTML, XHTML, and XML-based files. The following are RDFa’s features:

  • about – indicates what resource the metadata is about
  • rel and rev – indicates a relationship and reverse relationship with another source
  • src, href, and resource – indicates a partner resource
  • content – overrides content of the element when using the property attribute
  • datatype – applied to indicate the datatype of text specified for use with the property attribute
  • typeof – indicates the RDF type of the subject or the partner resource

How Microdata is utilized is similar to RDFa and its features are as follows:

  • itemscope – creates the item and specifies that the remainder of the element includes information about it
  • itemtype – describes the item and properties with a valid URL of a vocabulary
  • itemprop – specifies that the containing tag has the value of an indicated item property
  • itemid – indicates a sole identifier of the item
  • itemref – references properties of an element that aren’t within the itemscope. This code generates a list of element ids with additional properties in other parts of the document.

Also known as Javascript Object Notation for Linked Objects, JSON-LD is a type of annotation that applies schema by being pasted directly in the <head> or <body> tag of a web document.[1]  Vocabulary is indicated with “@context” and “@type” attributes.
